Looks like all American troops are coming home from Iraq by year's end, under an agreement put in place by George W. Bush, and finalized by President Obama.
So, let's see, while we were in Iraq, we didn't take any of their oil, and we're not bringing any home with us. We're also not getting any special oil contracts, at least as far as I'm aware. And we're not being driven out by an enemy, but instead are leaving on friendly terms, having achieved our military objectives. So it's not as if we WOULD stay and steal oil if we could.
Long story short, it looks as if we sacrificed thousands of American lives and hundreds of billions of dollars on Iraq, not for oil--that is, not for our own economic benefit--but to topple a violent dictator, to free a people, and to address a potential terrorism threat.
You might not consider those to be valid reasons for invading a country, particularly in light of the lousy intelligence that helped prop up the anti-terrorism rationale in the first place. But if you were one of those who said from the very beginning, "This is all about oil," it would be nice to hear you utter that most unusual of phrases: "I was wrong."
Footnote: And if you're Viggo Mortensen, it would be SUPER awesome if on top of that you also punched yourself in the head.
