Everybody knows we need to balance the budget. Democrats in Congress say, "Sure, let's do that--as long as we don't impose any cuts that hurt anyone, and as long as we only raise taxes on the wealthy." Republicans say, "Yup, balanced budget or bust--as long as it doesn't involve any tax increases."
Neither position ever gets us to a balanced budget.
In light of that, it's a good thing we have a president with the courage to confront both parties, rise above parochial interests, talk to the American people like grown-ups, lay down a plan for shared sacrifice, in short, LEAD.
I'd also like to... Oops, hang on--I've just been handed a note. Stick with me for a moment here while I read it...
Okay, apparently we don't have a president like the one I described. Looks like we're screwed.
UPDATE: It appears that the president read my original blog post, felt ashamed, and decided to get serious about the deficit. We'll see what he says on Wednesday...
