Gun training on Sunday
I'm going in for my concealed weapons permit training this Sunday. For those who are curious, it's going to be a loooooong day: 8:00 a.m. to 10 p.m. There's a combination of classroom time and range time, and you don't get your certificate until/unless you can demonstrate competence in the classroom and on the range. That is, you have to pass a written test and a shooting test.
I can see, possibly, having a gun at home for protection. Why do you want a concealed weapons permit? I respect your opinion and would like to better understand.

I definitely don't intend to carry it around on my person. But if I'm driving long distances, especially at night, I'd like to be able to carry a gun in my car. (I always say that if I broke down in the middle of nowhere, the three things I would want are water, a cell phone, and a gun.) That's considered "concealed," and you need a permit for that.
Beyond that, though, it's a political statement as well, very similar to my reasons for getting a lifetime membership to the NRA. when people refer to "those NRA crazies," I can say, "I'm one of them." Then they say, "But you seem so...normal," and I say, "Yeah, I am. What's that tell you?" Soon, I'll be able to say something similar when I hear people talk about the crazy people who carry concealed weapons.

I am not sure about Texas, but carrying a gun in your car in Arizona is legal. In the glove box, under the seat, on the dashboard...a holstered firearm is legal in your vehicle.
Even if it is locked and loaded, even if you have no permit.

Go for it!
And remember, lose the front sight, lose the fight. :)
I got my CCW here last year because the town I live in has the lowest percentage of police to citizens of all of Arizona. There's a substation a couple of miles away from my house, but that's still 5 minutes away with lightning-quick reaction times. I carry because I work in a rather bad section of town, and I don't want any surprises. I carry because the safety of my family rests first on my shoulders and then the shoulders of the government.
And I carry, because, well, I can. :)
